Americans are now paying nearly 20% more for TV, music, news, and other digital apps compared to 2020, and it’s not just about the occasional dollar increase—it’s adding up fast. A recent analysis by DepositAccounts, part of LendingTree, reveals that the creeping costs of digital subscriptions are becoming a significant financial burden. Researchers examined 15 popular services, from streaming giants like Hulu and Spotify to tools like Zoom Pro, and found that small, incremental price increases are masking a much larger trend. “Those $1, $2, or $3 bumps might seem minor, but when you’re subscribed to 10 or 15 services, it’s real money,” explains Matt Schulz, chief consumer finance analyst at LendingTree. “Over a year, it adds up.”
And this is the part most people miss: the cumulative effect. On average, subscribers juggle 4.5 services, shelling out $84 monthly—that’s over $1,000 annually. No wonder one-third of Americans surveyed by DepositAccounts canceled at least one subscription in the past six months due to cost.
Take Disney+ and Apple TV, for example. Disney+’s ad-free plan now costs $18.99 a month, more than double its price six years ago. Apple TV’s standard plan has surged 108% since 2020, even after adjusting for inflation. Meanwhile, streaming dominates TV viewership, accounting for 48% of all watching, according to Nielsen. With such dominance, are these price hikes justified?
Not all platforms are following suit. Apple’s iCloud storage is nearly 20% cheaper than in 2020, and Apple Music prices have dropped over 12%. But the question remains: Are these reductions enough to offset the steep increases elsewhere?
