The Backstory:
The council had initially planned to terminate the agreement with North Bay's facility due to rising costs. The contract extension price for 2026 soared to $36,260, a significant increase from the previous year's $29,000. This led the council to explore alternative solutions, such as organizing a dedicated collection day in June, estimated to cost between $20,000 and $40,000.
But here's where it gets controversial: Despite the higher cost of the collection day, the council believed it would be more convenient for residents, allowing them to dispose of hazardous materials without leaving home. However, residents had other ideas, expressing worries about the potential risks of storing these materials for extended periods.

Acknowledging these valid concerns, the council made a swift decision to cancel the planned collection day and maintain the existing arrangement with North Bay. This means residents can continue their routine of dropping off batteries, paint, chemicals, and other hazardous items at the North Bay depot, free of charge.
