Bold shift in leadership for the White Ferns: Melie Kerr named as New Zealand’s captain, taking the reins across all formats from Sophie Devine.
Kerr describes the appointment as a “massive privilege,” stepping into the role after Devine’s era as captain. Devine, 36, led the White Ferns across formats since 2020 and guided them to T20 World Cup glory against South Africa in 2024. She then retired from ODI cricket following the 2025 World Cup and relinquished the T20I captaincy as well.
Kerr, who has amassed 172 international appearances for New Zealand, will lead the team for the first time in a home ODI and T20I series against Zimbabwe, kicking off on 25 February.
“Growing up I dreamed of representing New Zealand, and now to have the chance to captain my country is a massive privilege,” the 25-year-old stated.
“I’m stepping into a role held by an exceptional line of leaders, so I don’t take this responsibility lightly. The captaincy won’t change who I am. I’ll stay true to myself and give everything I’ve got to guide this group and push us toward success for our country.”
Since debuting at 16 in 2016, Kerr has accumulated 3,757 runs and 201 wickets across both main formats. She earned Player of the Tournament honors during New Zealand’s triumphant T20 World Cup run in the United Arab Emirates, scoring 134 runs and taking 15 wickets.
New Zealand head coach Ben Sawyer praised Kerr: “Melie is an outstanding leader, respected both for her performances on the field and the regard she commands within the squad off it.” He added that guiding the White Ferns could elevate Kerr’s own game, and emphasized that she is ready to steer the team forward.
