Burnthouse Lane, a narrow and unlit road connecting the two villages, has become a cause for concern. Pupils from Hethersett Academy, residing in Little Melton, use this lane to commute to school, sharing it with dog walkers and cyclists. The road's dangers were brought to light in a recent rural road safety survey conducted by South Norfolk Labour MP Ben Goldsborough.
"I live on Burnthouse Lane in Little Melton," shared one respondent. "Families, school children, dog walkers, and cyclists all use this road. I wonder who will be the first to die?" This poignant statement reflects the community's fears.
MP Ben Goldsborough proposes a solution: utilizing a portion of the £15 million Active Travel fund received from the government to create a safe alternative path. He has initiated a petition at www.surveymonkey.com/r/FundThePath, urging residents to add their voices.
"When residents are asking such dire questions, it's a clear indication that urgent action is needed," Goldsborough stated. "The risk to life on Burnthouse Lane is evident, and we must send a strong message to the county council. They won't listen unless we make our voices heard."
However, Norfolk County Council has a different perspective. A spokesman stated, "We have not recorded any accidents at this location, and it is not currently part of our local cycling and walking plan." They acknowledged the community's concerns and the MP's involvement, promising a full response later this week.
The controversy lies in the differing views on the urgency and severity of the situation. While campaigners and residents fear for their safety, the council's stance suggests a lack of immediate action.
