As spring training begins, Mlodzinski is ready to take on the competition for the final two spots in the Opening Day starting rotation. His impressive performance against the Boston Red Sox, striking out three of the first four batters, is a promising sign.
"I'm determined to break the pattern of my slow starts," Mlodzinski said. "I want to dominate from the get-go, but I also need to be realistic. We're focusing on how to improve that first month. Once I make those adjustments, things seem to fall into place."
Pirates manager Don Kelly praised Mlodzinski's versatility and ability to adapt. "Carmen did extremely well last year. He made adjustments and dominated in the bullpen. Now, we want to see if he can maintain that velocity and movement throughout the game, especially in later innings."
Mlodzinski's ultimate goal is clear: to be a major league starting pitcher. "It's the pinnacle of the pitching world. I want the challenge of figuring it out. Being versatile enough to be a great starter or reliever is the ultimate role."
