Get ready for an exciting start to the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells! The top seed, Carlos Alcaraz, has a challenging road ahead.
Alcaraz, the current No. 1 player in the ATP rankings, will begin his campaign against a formidable opponent. He could face either the experienced Grigor Dimitrov, a former World No. 3, or the rising left-handed star, Terence Atmane. But here's where it gets tricky: lurking in the same half of the draw is the legendary Novak Djokovic, a five-time champion at Indian Wells.
Last year, Alcaraz faced Dimitrov in the California desert, dominating the Bulgarian in a fourth-round match. However, Dimitrov has proven his mettle at Indian Wells, reaching the semi-finals in 2021 and the quarter-finals in 2022.
Atmane, on the other hand, is a relative newcomer to the main draw at Indian Wells. He made his breakthrough last year in Cincinnati, reaching the semi-finals, and is currently ranked a career-high No. 52. The Frenchman has had some success against Dimitrov in their previous meetings, including a straight-sets victory last week in Acapulco.
"It's an incredible opportunity," Atmane said. "I'm looking forward to two tough battles. We'll stay focused on the first match, but it's exciting to think about the possibility of facing Alcaraz. Both of us will be giving it our all, so it's going to be a great battle."
Djokovic, tied with Roger Federer for the most titles in tournament history (5), will begin his quest for a sixth crown against either Kamil Majchrzak or Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The Serbian will be looking to bounce back from a stunning opening defeat last year and is on the hunt for his 102nd tour-level title.
Also in Djokovic's quarter is the defending champion and seventh seed, Taylor Fritz. Fritz will open against Damir Dzumhur or Jacob Fearnley.
In the same quarter as second seed Jannik Sinner, who is aiming for his first desert title, is eighth seed Ben Shelton. Shelton comes into the tournament with momentum after winning the Dallas title. Sinner will face James Duckworth or a qualifier in the second round.
