Artemi Panarin is feeling a mix of confusion and acceptance regarding the New York Rangers' recent decision not to extend his contract.
Following the Rangers’ 6-3 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, the atmosphere was notably heavy as reporters engaged with Panarin about his future. This conversation came just a day after Chris Drury, the president and general manager of the Rangers, sent a letter to fans outlining the team’s strategy for roster changes. In the wake of Drury's announcement, it was revealed that Panarin had a private meeting with him, where he learned that the team would not be pursuing a contract extension for him. Instead, the organization is willing to collaborate with him and his agent, Paul Theofanous, to facilitate a trade to a destination of Panarin's choice.
Since joining the Rangers in 2019 on a lucrative seven-year deal worth $81.5 million, Panarin has thrived in the vibrant atmosphere of Madison Square Garden, cherishing his time in New York.
